We are realizing the Green City Courtyard - Dworcowa Street as part of the project "Green City Corridors - Climate Awakening in Konin"!

In this area in places of unsealed pavement two large flowerbeds with numerous plantings of water retaining vegetation will appear. Four old flowerbeds are being filled with new plantings! A total of 6,000 perennials will be planted in this area!

The selection of plants meets the thematic premise entitled. "fragrance, color". Scent sensations from spring to autumn will be provided primarily by such plants as Rose 'Street Dance' and Pomeranian Honeysuckle 'Serotina'. Color, on the other hand, will be related to both the variety of flower and leaf colors of certain plant species. The technical design was developed by Wroclaw University of Life Sciences.

Photos of the flowers come from the websites: https://boot-kawka.pl/; https://www.podkarpackiesady.pl/; https://sklep.barcikowscy.eu/; https://e-katalogroslin.pl/; https://www.dutchgrown.pl/; https://szkolka.sklep.pl/; https://sadzawka.pl/; https://www.clematis.com.pl/;

Konin becomes a green city investing in many development projects and sustainable solutions. Green courtyard in Chorzeń is a great example of a green space that has just been built for its residents .

It is a part of a project "Green city corridors - climate awakening in Konin"  that has been realised by our partner: Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences. The initiative has been funded through the EEA Grants, co-financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway as well as the national and municipal budget.

In this project we wanted to give the space a recreational and decorative function. You can see there an unusual rainwater storage system – the leaves are rain catchers.

There are new benches with backrest and armrests, new garbage bins, a flowerpot with Red Box function. As the vertical vegetation is currently of interest, 140 sqm of green facades have been created, planted with parthenocissus vitacea, also known as thicket creeper. Nicely layered flower beds will provide maximum visual appeal when all the plants mature.

Next year in spring season, Chorzen’s community will enjoy a pleasant outdoor place. In the meantime, please take a look at the Green courtyard project   implementation!

Workshops for adults and for students of Konin secondary schools as part of the project 'Green city corridors - climate awakening in Konin'. Workshops for adults were held on 20 April 2023 and for Konin secondary school students on 21 April 2023. The workshops under the project 'Green city corridors - climate awakening in Konin' were conducted by partners of the City of Konin: the Polish Association 'Green Roofs' and the Norwegian Association for Green Infrastructure.

The workshop started with a joint welcome to the participants and introduction of the trainers. The participants were then divided into 3 groups, which started the workshop at the same time in three different thematic blocks. Thematic block 1 - 'The role of plants and water in the city landscape', thematic block 2 - 'The city in the face of ongoing climate change' and thematic block 3 - 'Designing green and blue infrastructure’. The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness among students and adults about the role of green and blue infrastructure and its impact on the urban microclimate.

The workshop made it possible to learn about simple ways of greening activities that can be applied at home. The experience gained during the workshop will help Konin residents get into the habit of caring for the environment (not only locally), and will be transferred to family and friends. The work in sub-groups consisted of conducting a SWOT analysis in relation to the city of Konin in each subsequent thematic block. After completing the first thematic block, the whole group moved together to the next block led by a different pair of trainers. The workshop ended with a joint presentation of the results of the work in the sub-groups and a summary of the individual blocks by the trainers.

Representatives of different professional groups have different perspectives on the same issue, and some aspects of the same issue may even be overlooked in particular industries. The aim of the workshop was to make participants aware of the complexity of green-blue infrastructure issues and to present relevant aspects from the point of view of other professionals. Conducted by specialists from the Polish Green Roofs Association and representatives from the Norwegian partner NFGI, the workshop helped to develop knowledge and awareness of the potential of green infrastructure in local conditions. The workshops provided information and inspiration defined according to the educational needs of the project stakeholder groups. Representatives of the Norwegian Association for Green Infrastructure presented the wide range of value creation inherent in the solutions, showed relevant Norwegian and European examples and the design possibilities of green-blue infrastructure in selected cases from Konin.

The dialogue and cooperation between the stakeholders and the specialists leading the workshop during the workshop was of high educational value and facilitated networking connections for future cooperation.

On March 31, 2023, members of the team for the implementation of the project entitled "Green city corridors - climate awakening in Konin" participated in a conference entitled: "GREENING THE ROOFS OF POLISH CITIES" organized by the Polish Association "Dachy Zielone" (partner of the City of Konin in the project) and the Student Scientific Circle of Gardeners at the University of Life Sciences in Wroclaw.

The conference was moderated by Dr. Marta Weber-Siwirska, President of PSDZ. During the conference, their presentations included:

  • Luigi Petito Head from secretariat of World Green Infrastructure Network/ EU Chapter, who gave a paper entitled: Innovations in EU policies supporting green infrastructure during climate transition,
  • country. Veronica Marcol, PSDZ, LARK, who presented the Økern Portal Green Roof as an example of pioneering design in an era of climate change, threats to biodiversity and increasing social demands.

The presentations were followed by a panel discussion, which included Magdalena Biela, Deputy Director of Urban green plant in Katowice; Marek Dera, President of the Wrocław-Południe Housing Cooperative; Grzegorz Synowiec, Deputy Director of the Climate and Energy Department, Wrocław City Hall; Kazimierz Śródka, SRDK Studio Architects Śródka and Katarzyna Wolańska, publicist for the zielonaInfrastruktura.pl portal.

Particular attention of the audience was drawn to the building presented by country arch. Veronica Marcol's 84,000-square-meter Økern Portal building.

Construction of the building was completed in 2021. Sustainability, applied biodiversity, energy efficiency are its main features. The building houses offices, restaurants, a hotel, as well as sports facilities. On its roof there is various types of greenery. It is a space open to everyone also for people with special needs. It is a meeting place in a green space full of biodiversity. School classes, business meetings can be held there, or you can simply spend your free time there. The plants that grow there are edible and used by the restaurants that are located in the building.

In turn, unused vegetables are turned into compost, which fertilizes the green roof. In addition, the building's roof drainage system has been designed so that rainwater is not discharged into the municipal network, but is used to irrigate the existing plants on the roof.

We would like to remind you that as part of the implementation of the project "Green urban corridors - climate awakening in Konin", representatives of the City of Konin in June 2022 were able to visit the roof of the building and learn about the solutions for the application of green and blue infrastructure. They then met with Ms. Veronika Marcol, who was one of the landscape architects involved in the design of Økern Portal.

Photos of Økern Portal (June 2022) are attached below.

The conference program is attached.

Training visit to Norway, Sweden and Denmark - training with certification in connection with the project titled "Green urban corridors - climate awakening Konin".

On June 19-23, 2022, a training trip to Norway, Sweden and Denmark took place in connection with the implementation by the City of Konin of the project entitled "Green urban corridors - climate awakening of Konin". - implemented within the framework of the "Environment, Energy and Climate Change" Program, financed from the funds of the EEA Financial Mechanism and the state budget. Representatives of the City of Konin, together with partners in the project the Polish Association "Green Roofs" and the Wroclaw University of Life Sciences, participated in a training course organized under the leadership of the Norwegian project partner Norwegian Association for Green Infrastructure.

The training provided Polish visitors with knowledge, training materials and instruction in the planning and design of green-blue infrastructure (BZI) and urban environment solutions. The professional training was complemented by field trips to completed Scandinavian projects where knowledge and innovations were put into practice. The Malmö region has been a center of excellence in BZI innovation and implementation since the 1990s. The Norwegian Green Infrastructure Association (NFGI) has for many years supported and collaborated with the Scandinavian Green Roofs Association (SGRI), based in Malmö, Sweden. SGRI has for many years provided hands-on summer training in green roof design and planning for students and professionals. SGRI has also contributed to the development of Swedish guidelines for the production and maintenance of green roofs. The institute has classrooms and roof areas where green roof design is demonstrated and where research and testing is carried out.

The Malmö region offers a large number of suitable BZI projects that are readily available. The training visit was aimed at exchanging information, examples of good practices and ideas between the participants of the visit and Norwegians. The visit will certainly contribute to the implementation of good best practices in the BZI area. The combination of learning and first-hand experience will inspire and educate Polish project participants and contribute to the improvement of Polish BZI projects. Contact with Norwegian and Scandinavian professionals will build Polish-Norwegian network connections useful for proposed BZI interventions within and outside the scope of the project. The project titled "GREEN CITY CORRIDORS - CLIMATE CHANGE IN KONIN" is implemented within the framework of the "Environment, Energy and Climate Change" Program, benefits from a grant of almost 1.6 million euros received from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway as part of the EEA funds and more than 1.2 million PLN received from the state budget, and is financed in the amount of more than 1.4 million PLN from the budget of the City of Konin. The aim of the project is to increase the city's resilience to negative phenomena resulting from climate change and adaptation to these changes, raise public awareness of climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of green-blue infrastructure investments. The project also includes information and education activities, including campaigns to raise public awareness of climate change adaptation.
